Self-Care Awareness: How to Journal Your Way to a Better Day

These past couple of years have introduced many new challenges to not only society’s physical health, but mental health as well. More and more of us have begun to realize the need for more self-care in our lives. Google searches for the term “self-care” had already been seen rising since 2010, but it was in September of 2020 that the search term reached its all-time high.

Since then, interest in self-care has remained prevalent, and if anything, only increased, as people continued to search for ways to take care of both their physical and mental well-being.

When it comes to self-care, there are many habits that can be considered a form of it, including tasks like applying a face mask, exercising regularly, or socializing with friends. However, there are many reasons why these activities might be inaccessible to some people. Yet, there is one form of self-care that is incredibly simple and personal. . . journaling.

Journaling has become increasingly popular as people look to reflect on their lives and find space for peace and improvement. Today, we want to dive further into the topic of journaling, and discuss how anyone can take advantage of this healing activity.

Journaling

The concept of journaling is quite self-explanatory. Journaling is the act of taking the time to write down one’s thoughts, with particular attention paid to how they are feeling, what their intentions or goals are, and what they are grateful for. By taking the time to write down these ideas and feelings in a journal, individuals can more easily recognize them, pay attention to them, and make a daily habit of concentrating on these feelings.

In a world where it is easy to feel boxed in, with problems coming at you from every side, journaling is a great way to maintain a healthy perspective and keep what’s important to you in mind. While some people may already do some variation of this in their head, or by thinking out loud, keeping these observations in a journal can allow you to look back and see how far you have come or determine what has been holding you back.

The Basics

So, how does one begin journaling? Well, the materials required to start are quite simple. All you will need is:

  • Paper
  • A pen
  • A quiet environment

If you want to step your journaling game up a bit and make it more fun and personal, you can purchase your own journal and pen with unique logos or slogans that you use specifically for journaling. This can help you get into “the zone” when it is time for your daily journaling.

Here at the PenFactory, we offer an assortment of Pens and Journals that can be personalized to your heart’s content. Let’s take a look at a few that you can consider for your journaling supplies.

Pens

This elegant pen features rose gold accents and can be personalized to feature your favorite slogan or graphic. Also consider adding your name, the label “Journaling Pen”, or even the date when you began your journaling journey.

One of our more unique options, this pen is for the writer who desires nothing but the highest build quality for their journaling supplies. This solid brass pen is wrapped in Italian leather, offering an exquisite appearance, and a firm grip. This pen can be personalized as well and will serve as a great tool when developing your journaling habit.

Some people who journal like to trade in their paper notebooks for a digital app sometimes. For those writers, we also offer a flexible solution. With this pen, you not only get a traditional writing utensil but also a stylus for tablet and/or phone use as well. On top of this additional practicality, this pen also offers a beautiful design, featuring a white brass build with gold accents, as well as an LED light tip. You can further customize this pen with phrases or logos to truly make it yours.

Journals

When it comes to journals, we offer a huge selection featuring additional features for those that want to further organize their journaling habit. We have many calendar journals that allow you to not only organize your thoughts, but further plan out your week or keep track of your accomplishments on a day-to-day basis.

Just like our pens, these notebooks can also be personalized to feature your favorite phrases or graphics. Consider what will make you more enthusiastic to stay with your journaling habit, or make this act truly feel like an important personal event.

How is Journaling Beneficial

Even if you haven’t heard the term “journaling” before, odds are that you know what a diary is, and have heard it mentioned by friends or in popular culture. Teen and young adult books, movies, and TV shows have often featured characters keeping track of their feelings in a little notebook they keep under their bed, and it is always a major issue if someone discovers and looks through it.

You may have kept your own diary but abandoned the practice as you felt it was too “childish”. However, for children and adults alike, journaling, keeping a diary, or whatever else you want to call this active tracking of thoughts, contributes greatly to helping you understand your thoughts and gain control of your emotions.

When it comes to handling one’s emotions, being able to express yourself in healthy ways is an important part. This is why journaling can be such a powerful tool for managing your mental health, it involves you taking deliberate time to analyze your thoughts, provides a space for recording them, and then asks that you confront them in a way that allows you to recognize your struggles and your triumphs, and work to address any issues.

Anxiety, stress, and depression are mental health concerns that journaling is often used to help manage. But beyond that, even just getting your responsibilities in order, facing your fears, and learning to identify positives and negatives in your life are all things that journaling can help you accomplish.

How to Begin Journaling

It is important that you consider journaling an everyday habit, so if you’re planning to start, keep in mind a time every day that you can set aside to focus on this activity. There isn’t necessarily an ideal time for everyone to journal, and people will have their own routines that they determine best fits their lifestyle and goals. Morning journaling can be great to get your thoughts organized for the day. Night journaling is useful for reflecting on the day that passed and offloading some weight before you go to bed.

Outside of time, you should also consider a peaceful location where you can work on your journal. Some people find solace in nature, others on their porches or balcony. Some people prefer silence, while others do their daily journaling while listening to their favorite songs or podcasts. Whatever puts you in a soothing state of mind and inspires you to journal is an ideal environment.

The last thing to consider before you begin, is also what type of journaling you want to focus on. Not everyone will look to accomplish the same things with their daily journaling, so we have collected a few different techniques that you can look to emulate for your journaling habit.

The Template Method

For those who love to be organized and make the most out of their time and effort, this journaling method is a great option. Here are some template topics that you can cover when completing your daily journal:

Grateful Statements – 10 people, things, places, or ideas you are grateful for

Good Moments – 3 moments that made you feel happy, at peace, or positive today and why (it is also okay if you weren’t happy 3 times that day if you have any time at all you can record that)

Bad Moments – 3 moments when you didn’t feel too hot today, why you think this happened, and a good way you can respond to them next time.

Ideas – Write down some new ideas that you had today or times that you felt inspired

Goals – Your top 3 goals for the week followed by your top 3 long-term goals (months or years ahead)

People You Love – people you want to send love, luck, or happiness to today

The Creativity Unblocker

Are you an artist or creative type who needs some relief from a creative block? Here are some ways that you can use journaling to open up your mind and be more reflective

Free Write – Start a timer for 3 minutes, and free-write everything that is on your mind. This could be in poetic form or just thoughts.

Sketch – Make 3 Sketches to enhance your creativity: one self-portrait, one portrait of someone you like (even fictional characters), and one sketch of a place you would love to go today.

Line Drawing – Make a quick line drawing by smoothly forming shapes without removing the pen from the paper, all in one stroke

Be Inspired – Write down 10 films, books, paintings, TV shows, or other forms of media that have inspired who you are.

The Faithful Writer

If you are religious or spiritual, one of the strongest ways to grow closer to your faith is to write down your prayers and/or intentions. Take 15 minutes out of your day to write down your prayers, analyze holy scripture or text, reflect on your beliefs, and ask for guidance on tasks you need to complete throughout the day.

The Productivity Hacker

If you want to make your schedule more efficient, then this is a great method for reflecting on the tasks you have for the day and figuring out how to effectively approach them. Here are some things you can include in your journal:

Top Three – Write down the top 3 tasks you must complete during the day

The Rest – Write down the rest of the tasks that you would ideally like to complete but may not get the opportunity to do so.

Agenda – based on these tasks, plan a schedule for the day with the time it should take you to begin and complete each task. If there are more essential tasks you must complete (such as exercise and cooking) make sure to factor those into your agenda as well.

Rewards – Write down a time that you will make sure to stop working for the day, then decide how you will reward yourself for a day of hard work. Some things you can consider for your reward time are watching a movie, having dinner with friends, reading a book, having a cup of tea, or going out for drinks.

The Lifelong Student

Are you someone that is constantly reading books, watching movies, and just overall consuming interesting stories and information? If so, you can use your journal as a way to reflect on everything you learned that day. Here are some ideas to cover in your journal:

What am I reading – Your current book, articles, poetry, or magazines you are reading. Reflect on the portions that you read that day.

What am I watching – Your top movies, shows, YouTube channels that you’re consuming, and why.

What am I listening to – Your favorite music and/or podcasts and what you heard/enjoyed that day.

What am I doing – Your current favorite hobbies, exercises, restaurants, and other places to visit.

Where I want to go – Your dream travel destination for that day.

Journaling is for Everyone

Of all the various forms of self-care, journaling is one of the most accessible, healing, and mind opening activities that we can do to take care of ourselves. With just paper, a pen, and your own thoughts, you can better manage your emotions and put your life in perspective.

For those who don’t already journal, there is never a bad time to start. The sooner you can begin to identify, analyze and work towards addressing the concerns affecting your life, the sooner you can begin to feel in control of it. There are many times we can feel bogged down by our struggles, only to lose sight of the things we enjoy and the goals we work towards. By journaling, you can help yourself focus on and prioritize what’s most important to you.

If you are starting or continuing your journaling journey, we wish you the best of luck! And if you ever want to add some more sentimentality, personality, or enthusiasm to your journaling sessions, then consider getting your own customized pens and journals here at the PenFactory.
